A Brief History
|
|
The building at 39 Main Street, was built in 1855 as a carriage factory by Mr. Samuel Hadden. In 1885 he sold out to one of his employees, George Brooks. He continued the business, supplying local folks with buggies, wagons and many styles of carriages. With Mr. Brooks death, his son Clarence took over the business, bringing it into the 20th century, transferring it from horse to auto industry in 1926. New Chevrolets were sold here with car repairs and gasoline pumps out front. Many local people have memories of seeing horses being shod at the double forge that resides upstairs on the main level in Bodles Opera House. In 1985 Jarvis Boone purchased the building and brought his vaudeville show to downtown Chester, and staffed it with singing waiters, waitresses & bartenders who still perform to this day. The room that houses Maggie’s was a dirt floor basement where old buggy and car parts were found and Boone used it as storage until 1992. At that time he and his son decided to make an old time brass and oak barroom out of it. The walls are made of recycled church pews, the bar was salvaged from a bar in Middletown, NY, (coincidentally once named Maggie’s), the tin ceiling and mosaic tile floor were installed to complete the effect of old time ambience.
